BITTERNS portfolio Bitterns are not the easiest birds to phtograph and a distant view is usually as good as it gets. A flagship for wetland conservation this elusive Heron is on the conservation 'Red list' and due to loss of habitat and persecution the bittern was extinct as a breeding bird by 1900.
After slowly recovering they again reached near extinction by 1997. Bittern numbers are estimated by the noise that they make to attract females and establish their territory (this is called booming) and there are still only 45-55 booming males in the UK.
